There\u2019s something about living in Sheffield which makes
\neveryone delighted to be at the seaside, whatever the weather
\nand however far away the sea may be at low tide. The sea air,
\nthe traditional amusements, ice cream, candy floss and sticks of
\nrock and the typical sounds of the seaside: children\u2019s voices,
\nseagulls, amusement arcades and rides as well as the wind in
\nyour waterproof hood and the patter of rain on the pavement.
\nThe smell of fish and chips and of shells and seaweed \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 deposited\u00a0at the last high tide, of\u00a0<\/span>doughnuts and coffee stalls, these all \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>make up the Cleethorpes experience.\"IMG_0266\"<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Many of us have been going to Cleethorpes for up to 60 or so
\nyears and all have happy memories of times there. Some
\nremember enjoying it as children, having a name label pinned
\nto their lapel so as not to get lost amongst the coach loads of
\nother children from Working Men\u2019s clubs. Some have holidayed
\nthere with our own young families and friends and some have
\ngone for day trips, latterly mainly watching the families on the
\nbeach, digging sandcastles and eating ice cream in spite of the
\nEnglish summer weather. Some of us used to cycle, some
\nrented a caravan, some of us travelled there by train arriving
\nwith fishing nets and sandwiches almost onto the beach.<\/p>\n

\"IMG_0290\"<\/a>Some\u00a0of us remember best the amusements and rides including the \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>donkeys; some remember building sandcastles and getting sunburnt. \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Others remember the ride in a pony-trap to see the sea \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span>when the tide was really low- so far out it is almost impossible \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span>to see and can be judged only by the ships seen on the horizon, \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>waiting to be able to sail into Grimsby port.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our own annual outing to Cleethorpes took place in September,
\nwith 21 of us in our comfortable coach, provided as ever by
\nGordon\u2019s Coaches, speeding towards the coast in eager
\nanticipation of the exhilarating day ahead as well as the
\ncomforting familiarity of the experience. The sky was dramatic
\nover the flat countryside but it was sunny and we were
\noptimistic about the weather once we were there.
\nWe enjoyed our lunch of fish and chips and wonderful salads
\naccompanied by bread and butter and lots of hot tea at the
\nOcean fish bar where the service was as ever friendly and kind.
\nAs we emerged from the warmth of the restaurant, we noticed
\nit had been raining so\u00a0up went the umbrellas\u00a0and out came the
\nwaterproofs and\u00a0blankets and we set\u00a0off for a walk to the
\nsea the front.<\/p>\n

\nEarly September can be gorgeous and even hot but not that
\nday. We walked back to our coach against the bracing wind and
\nwith brollies blowing inside out but enjoying the sounds, sights
\nand smells of the place as well as each other\u2019s company and
\nhaving a laugh.<\/p>\n

\nOnce back on the coach, full of fresh sea air and the treats we\u2019d
\nenjoyed, we warmed up and enjoyed singing along to the music
\nour driver Tony had chosen for us. We did have a lovely time!<\/p>\n
